Questions, Answered

Quick answers

Straight from what the CCA publishes.

How does certification work?

A CCA-registered practitioner evaluates you by live video and decides, using their own clinical judgment, whether your condition may benefit from cannabis. If approved, a written certification is issued the same visit. See the CCA's Patients & Caregivers page.

Is there a conditions list?

Not since January 2024. Under Code of Virginia § 54.1-3408.3, any CCA-registered practitioner can certify whatever condition they believe cannabis may help with.

Does it have to be video?

Yes. Virginia law requires real-time interactive audiovisual telemedicine — a phone call alone doesn't qualify.

Is state registration mandatory to purchase?

No. The CCA's patient card is optional and separate. Your written certification plus a valid ID is enough to purchase.

What does it cost?

Consultation pricing is set by the practitioner platform and shown before booking. The CCA's $50 fee is a separate, optional charge.

How do I renew?

Book another telehealth visit before your current certification expires. Renewal is valid for another year from that visit.

Who can certify me?

Physicians (MD/DO), physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, licensed in Virginia and registered with the CCA.

How much can I possess?

Up to 4 ounces within any 30-day period. Current figures at the CCA's Patients & Caregivers page.

Do out-of-state cards work?

No. Only certifications from CCA-registered Virginia practitioners are valid at Virginia dispensaries.

Do I need to live in Princess Anne?

No. This site is centered here, but the process works identically for any Virginia resident, wherever in the state you are.

The Deeper Detail

Beyond the basics

A County Seat Since 1691

Princess Anne dates to 1691, when it became the seat of Princess Anne County — sometimes called "Princess Anne Courthouse" — a role it held until the 1963 merger with Virginia Beach. The 17th-century courthouse still stands near the junction of Princess Anne Road and North Landing Road.

Home to City Hall

The Virginia Beach Municipal Center — including city hall and most municipal offices — sits in Princess Anne, making it a major daily employment hub. Access runs mainly through two-lane roads, so traffic around typical office hours is a genuine local factor.

Princess Anne Commons

The district also includes Princess Anne Commons, home to the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, an amphitheater, and the Princess Anne Athletic Complex — meaning event traffic around evenings and weekends can meaningfully affect travel through the area.

Where It Sits Relative to the Rest of the City

Princess Anne marks a rough transition point — denser, more developed Virginia Beach to the north, lower-density areas farther south. Neighboring communities like Red Mill and Landstown share informal boundaries with the area rather than sharp official lines.

Not Just for Local Residents

This site is centered on Princess Anne, but Virginia's certification process is identical for any resident of the state, wherever you happen to live or work.

Princess Anne, Virginia Beach: An Overview

From County Seat to City District

Princess Anne dates to 1691, when Lower Norfolk County split and the eastern half became Princess Anne Shire, later Princess Anne County. The community served as county seat — often called Princess Anne Courthouse — from 1691 until the 1963 consolidation with Virginia Beach, and its 17th-century courthouse still stands near Princess Anne Road and North Landing Road. Today the area is home to the Virginia Beach Municipal Center and Princess Anne Commons, anchored by the Sportsplex and an amphitheater.

No Fixed List to Satisfy

Since January 2024, Virginia hasn't maintained a fixed list of qualifying conditions. Under Code of Virginia § 54.1-3408.3, a CCA-registered practitioner certifies patients using their own clinical judgment during a live video visit.

After the Visit, What Happens

Book a video visit with a CCA-registered practitioner. If approved, a written certification is issued immediately, valid for up to a year. That certification and a government-issued ID are enough to purchase at any licensed Virginia dispensary the same day. Full detail at the CCA's Patients & Caregivers page.
